Five on Friday: Flight >>>>>

One:  This past Saturday, my oldest daughter, Mary, and her youngest daughter, Sarah, and I drove to Seaside, Oregon, to spend some time on the beach with some of Mary's women friends from church.  We forgot our kite, but we had barely gotten settled on the sand when folks around us started launching theirs...more than six we counted in flight!  We could hardly see Tillamook Rock Lighthouse through the mist to the south of us; and once on our way back into Portland, Oregon, on Highway 26, we got some fleeting glimpses of Mt. Hood to the east, but the journey was a success.

Two:  At home we have had family and friends gathered around various tables and sometimes a campfire as we enjoyed the fire smoke taking flight above us and chasing away some of the annoying insects, especially mosquitos!

Three: Our fruit is taking a downward flight from laden tree branches and into our hands! Mary has made one apple pie so far, and I have eaten several fresh apples and one scrumptious peach.

Four: We have found several fledglings after their early flights.  This one used a rock as a resting nest for quite some time, and my oldest granddaughter, Hayley, watched in distress as a baby robin tumbled from his nest on the bat box on the garage, and fluttered down into the green lawn garden trailer of the mower below.  Mr. and Mrs. Robin are tending him there and we are staying clear so as not to disturb the process.[ I have been tending to my knitting and crocheting and reading inside :)]

Five:  The flowers are still taking flight toward the sun when it dares to shine. We are excited that the wildflower seeds my youngest son planted are now a lovely patch of Poppies and Daisies and such. We now have a pretty variety of colored Sweet Pea blooms, a first for us, and one Joseph's Coat climbing rose bush is sending branches up to the roof!

Since I plan to be trailer camping with my youngest daughter, Elisabeth and her husband at Cape Lookout State Park on the northern Oregon coast I may not publish a post next week, but thank you Amy for hosting Five on Friday.  I am really enjoying sharing common interests with folks around the world through this link-up format, and am sending my love to anyone who reads this :)

Have you, or things around you, taken flight this past week?

Gracie xx

  2. I love American place names. Seaside, Oregon. You know exactly what you'll find there! Of course English place names are similar, it's just that they're in a variety of languages that controlled the UK for millennia past. For example Pendle Hill stems from pen, the Celtic word for hill; dale, the Old English word for hill; and hill. So it's really called Hill Hill Hill.

  16. Love your Oregon coast. One of my favourite holidays was driving it back in the 70's as part of a trip from Vanncouve,BC to Mexico. Also the picture of the peach make me drool.
In Ontario Canada we won't see our local peaches for another month.

  20. Oh what fun! You captured some perfect summer moments and I love what you shared. Those fruit trees look amazing!! I think I literally drooled over that bite out of the peach photo. Holy yum!!!

We have had some horrible mosquito nights as well. Is there anything better than a summer campfire anyway? :)

Here's wishing you wonderfully sweet mosquito free thoughts my Friend! xoxo

  30. We had fun watch birds while on a boat ride this week into the Yaquina Bay in Newport. Watched sea gulls follow the boat when the crab pots were put out. Saw cormorants and grey heron flying as well and Coast Guard helicopter. Boats name was the Gracie K, which made me think of you! Have a good time at the coast this next week. So pretty over there. I bought some bing cherries yesterday and need to make it into a crisp as we have so many now but it will be so good! Happy and safe week, my friend!

  31. Looking forward to all these beautiful things when we get there! Love your day at the beach! Your cookout looks fun, and such wonderful fruit! (We get oranges and lemons and grapefruits on the trees in our yards--not mine but others--here in Tucson, but not berries and other fruits like peaches....can't wait! I do have a little lemon tree in a pot I'm going to try to keep! :-) ) Your baby robin will hopefully be fine. Our actual departure has been delayed till probably mid-October. It will be getting colder by then and I dread the possibility of running into a snow or ice storm on the trip, but I am leaving it all in God's hands. I really appreciate your prayers! Have a great week, my new friend!

  35. How clever you are to see so many examples of 'flight'! We are preparing for our annual Flight to Harris for a wee holiday. And last weekend I managed to get across to the Isle of Arran for a getaway. I prefer flying by boat, train or car rather than actual airplanes. The photo of kites at the beach reminds me so much of my childhood. My Dad used to MAKE kites of balsa wood! They worked, some of the time. Your peach looks lovely. Take care!

  36. The beach looks like a fun place to spend time! Neat to see the kites. When I was little, my parents and I used to fly kites in St. John's park by the Willamette River. We had a lot of fun! The campfire looks fun as well, though I would hate the mosquitoes (as I'm sure you all did). They are one of the only things I dislike about summer. Glad to see you have a bountiful apple harvest! The folks who own the apple orchard we pick for in the fall just brought up some Missouri peaches, so we bought a box from them. We ate some and then canned the rest along with the peaches our own trees produced. What a treat they will be to enjoy this winter. Peaches are definitely among my favorite fruits. Awesome to see the beautiful wildflowers. Enjoy your time camping!

  37. The beach is so beautiful and looks like a perfect place to fly kites. Lovely to see Mt. Hood on your drive. Your backyard is a cozy and peaceful place to host family and friends, too. I have a 'Joseph's Coat' rose, too and it is blooming once again. Love the wildflowers and delicious looking fruit. The tomato cage props made me smile :) Thank you for your sweet visits, Gracie. Hope your camping trip was fun! Hugs xo Karen

  38. Oh, peach pie, I am now dreaming of that. It's really hard to get good peaches in the UK, they are either imported and very expensive or they have no taste whatsoever. I would love to make peach pie, cobbler, ice cream....

That beach is amazing, they way the cliff rises straight up off the water, so dramatic. And the wildflowers are looking really beautiful in your garden. x
