To Burbank and Back on WIP Wednesday

My oldest sister, Carolyn lives in CA's  northern San Francisco Bay area. My older sister, Margaret, now lives in Burbank, CA, one of the hubs for media production work.  Margaret's oldest daughter, Heather, and her husband are both employed in recording sound for TV productions.

Carolyn and I drove from Sonoma south to Burbank last Thursday to vist Margaret and her family over the weekend. While we were there Heather took us to the recording studio where she works.  It was fascinating to watch her match sounds with actions through various computers! [My blog-techie skills pale in comparison :-)]

The drive from Sonoma to Burbank on Thursday,  and back on Monday, took us through dry land that is enlivened through an irrigation system that is embattled in arguments over who gets water rights.  We saw some orchards that were like eerie waves of dried driftwood.  But mostly we saw mile after mile of green vineyards, and thriving orchards of pistachios, mandarins, and more.

We saw the windmill farms in Altamont Pass, and a mothball fleet of retired ships from WWII in Suisun Bay, before we made it back to Sonoma where we are resting, and I have crocheted more rows on my shawl and started knitting another dishcloth.

Maybe I will get some more stitching done while I am here with Carolyn for two more weeks, then we plan to drive back to OR and Carolyn will stay with me for another two weeks.  Woohoo!!!

What's new with you ?

xx
Gracie :-)

An then to have Carolyn home with you for two weeks. Maybe I'll have to travel to Portland to see you and meet her. I would love to know if there could possible two women on this earth as sweet as you!!!
Your pictures show a beautiful story of your travels and your shawl is coming along beautifully.

Blessings to you and safety as you travel my friend,

  9. Wow, you "get around" Gracie! Those photos bring back many memories of trips to the Bay Area where my uncle had an almond orchard. I always felt that California was a different planet compared to Oregon. I hope you have a great time with your sisters.

Funnily enough we were just munching on some dried Bing cherries sent from the NW. I read somewhere that the Bing cherry was discovered by a Chinese man named Bing.

Our news, as you asked, is that our daughter is recovering from a horrendous dip in already bad ME - we discovered she is severely anemic. We were able to travel to Glasgow to visit her school-to-be. 7 more weeks until we move there! The landscape is not so dramatically different from Aberdeen, though.

  16. It's so interesting seeing your photos of America. All that fruit growing and the ships moth- balled. We don't tend to keep any of our large ships they are either sold to another coubtry or sold for scrap metal!

  17. I love seeing your photos. We went to California many years ago and it brought back memories of stopping the RV to buy road side fruit from farms. That shawl is fantastic can't wait to see you model it. Thanks for your lovely comments, I really appreciate the time it takes - I am just happy if you stop by! Jo x

  22. Your photos make me just a tiny bit homesick for California ... but only a tiny bit. :) I recognise so many of those places. Water rights - what a tangled subject!

That shawl is so pretty - a perfect project for that yarn. I had a skein of the same colourway and had the hardest time coming up with a project that would do justice to the beautiful long colour changes.

Hope you enjoy (enjoyed) your travels and visiting time! Do you miss Mt. Hood when you're away from home?
